Dunia Mekonnen Tegegn joined Tesfaye Amare, PLLC after working as a Human Rights Officer, at the East Africa Regional Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. She also worked as a Program Officer on ending Violence against Women and Girls at UN Women, a United Nations entity. Dunia has worked with the Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association and extended legal services to victims of gender-based violence. She provided legal advice on common property rights, child custody, maintenance and other family law matters. As an active member of the Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association, Dunia served as a trainer on ending Violence against Women particularly focusing on rape and sexual harassment issues. Dunia has also worked with UNICEF Ethiopia and advised on child protection issues including on Inter country adoption, foster care and sponsorship. She has assisted Ethiopia’s Ministry of Justice with developing a national guidelines for civil compensation for survivors of violence, as well as criminal investigations and prosecution of violent acts against women.

After coming to the United States, Dunia worked as a Program Associate with Women Learning Partnership and as a fellow with the Justice Defenders Program of the American Bar Association. Dunia also provides legal intake services to Washington Lawyers Committee for Urban Affairs and Civil rights on a pro bono basis. Dunia holds a Master of Laws in National Security from Georgetown University Law Center and a Master of Arts in Human Rights from Addis Ababa University. Dunia earned a bachelor’s degree in law from Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia. She holds certificates on Women’s Law and Public Policy, Migration & Humanitarian Emergencies from Georgetown University. In her free time Dunia loves to travel and participate in grassroots initiatives such as Rotaries and Toast Master clubs.

Memberships

Dunia currently serves as a member of the human rights committee for the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNANCA) and co-chaired its African Affairs committee. Dunia is also a member of the Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU), the Ethiopian Bar Association and the African Working Group on Sustainable Development(AWG).
